Ransomware – Your Company’s Worst Nightmare
Can your business survive a ransomware attack? What about a data leak? Ransomware attacks have evolved over the years. I can go through statistics, but needless to say, ransomware has become a pandemic.
It may hit you when you least expect it. All of a sudden, you start hearing chatter from other desks, and within minutes panic ensues. Now everyone is involved, and it’s been confirmed, your business has been attacked by ransomware.
So now what? We’ll lets hope your company has a secure backup that wasn’t affected by the ransomware. By default, ransomware seeks out backups, and tries to delete them. This is where your IT department needs a sophisticated backup solution that stores backups on, and offsite.
There are a few outcomes at this point.
1) You are able to recover, because you have an unaffected backup.
2) You can’t recover, and you’re considering paying the ransom to get your data back.
3) You are able to recover, but the attackers stole your data, and are threatening to leak the data unless the ransom is paid.
Attackers know more and more businesses are getting backup solutions to protect their data, however the attackers now attempt to exfiltrate your data, so they have further leverage to get the ransom payment.
Staying protected from ransomware is no easy task. Your anti-malware program may or may not save you, so having a solid backup and disaster recovery plan is key, along with employee education goes a long way to help stay safe.
